Tye Senior Citizens

The Tye Community Center originally known as the West Side Baptist Church, and later used by the Lion's Club in Tye, after the church disbanded, was designated in 1967 for city sponsored events by the trustees of the property.

Since 1967, the Community Center was used to serve the first meal of the Tye Senior Citizens before a building of their own was built adjoining the Community Center.

In April 1977, senior citizens in the area gathered at the Tye Community Center for a noon meal.

Kennon Law and Mayor James Barley visited Rose Park Senior Citizen Center in Abilene to see what ideas they could get.  That project was funded and administered through WCTCOG.  That office also funded the City of Tye for equipment and meals.  On August 5, 1977 funding was verified by Dot Vanderslice, and Ann Ammons, COG staff members.  The amount of funding was $6,208.00 and the Tye City Council provided $2,500.00 for redecorating the center.

The senior citizens of Tye Nutritional Project officially opened September 7, 1977.

The Tye area senior citizens continued to meet and have meals delivered to them three days a week.

On September 20th, 1979, an open house was planned for a new 28 x 50 portable building that was added and gave the community and senior citizens a place to meet.

March 10th, 1981, Tye city officials were told that contractual changes would occur in the Senior Citizen Nutritional Program at Tye.  The City of Abilene agreed to consider a contract with Tye for 6 additional months to allow Tye sufficient time to find a place for the preparation of the meals.

On September 8, 1981 it was reported to the Tye City Council that a building for a central kitchen would be needed.  The Nutritional Program Kitchen Fun was established.  $2100.00 was given by the Tye senior citizens, pledges of $4000.00 came in immediately.  Others donated materials, fixtures and services.  West Central Council of Governments provided a grant for kitchen equipment and a van to transport the meal to Buffalo Gap, Tuscola and Lawn.  October 1, 1981 Tye entered a contract with CCOG for the rural Taylor County nutritional program.

March 18th, 1997 the City of Tye signed an agreement with the Texas Leverage Fund to borrow enough money to build a new Tye Community Center 40' x 80'.  Numerous donations were given to the city and the 4B Sales Tax dollars were pledged to pay for the building.  The final cost of the building was $178,746.00

On November 18th, 1998 the building was turned over to the City of Tye - Catawba Resources had finished the project.

Today the site serves Tye, Buffalo Gap, Tuscola, Lawn, Elm Valley and Merkel.  Four vans are now transporting meals.  The five cities provide the site leaders salary and WCCOG provides a project coordinator.

January 1st, 2003 the Tye Economic Development Corporation entered into a contract for $57,000.00 with Hicks Construction to build a 25' x 40' extension on the southside of the Tye Community Center.  This space was to house the offices and board room for the Tye Economic Development Corporation and Tye Industrial Development Corporation.

On June 1st, 2003 TEDCO and TIDCO moved into their new office space.  The Tye Community Center Attendant, LuAnne Goodgion receives calls to lease the Tye Community Center from this location.

At the July 10th, 2003 TEDCO meeting a motion was made to allow the Chamber of Commerce - Tye, Texas, and the Tye Cemetery Committee to meet in the TEDCO/TIDCO board room.

The Senior citizens sponsor musicals on the first Saturday of each month to raise money.  They plan cards and dominoes on their meeting dates: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
